Example of the Bereans

Acts 17:11 "Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, because they received the message with goodwill, searching the Scriptures each day to see whether these things were true."

Question of the Day: What made the Bereans so special?

Answer: The Bereans have a verse in today's reading that speaks to our question of the day.

Acts 17:11 "Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, because they received the message with goodwill, searching the Scriptures each day to see whether these things were true."

Let's break it down. We should all desire to be like the Bereans. What does it means to be "more noble minded?"

Rabbi Trail: Because we are studying the New Testament, my Hebrew abilities are somewhat shelved. At the same time, my Greek abilities are somewhat non-existent. Although, with the technology available today, everyone is without excuse. End RT.

A similar Greek word (used more often in Scripture) means acceptable or well-pleasing. What made the Bereans acceptable and well-pleasing? The Bible tells us in the next few words ... "because they received the message with goodwill, searching the Scriptures each day to see whether these things were true."

The Greek word translated as goodwill is further translated in other versions as "inclination, readiness, eagerness, willingness, promptness." That should describe our hearts as we receive our daily bread from the Word of God.

The Bereans received their verse of praise in the Bible. We are still writing our own. May we all receive this verse ...

Matthew 25:21 "His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You were faithful with a little, so I'll put you in charge of much. Enter into your master's joy!'"

Blessings. R. Michael.
