Matthew 5:3 part 1 of 3

Matthew 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

This verse and the following 8 verses start with the word "Blessed". The meaning of the Hebrew word Baruch is "to bend the knee" or "bow down". It is how we start our Hebrew blessings, but that word is not used here. Rather, Ashre, which is an expression of being overcome with joy, is used. Now, let's read that verse again. "Overcome with joy are the poor in spirit, for the kingdom of heaven will belong to them."

Yeshua starts His "big sermon" with this thought. To be spiritually poor is a good thing. This connotes humility and one who is devout. To be spiritually devoted is beyond desire; it's not what you want, it's who you are. It requires the submission of the flesh to every spiritual thing. Of course, that will bring forth a spiritual inheritance.

"The kingdom of heaven will belong to them." These people, who appear forsaken in this world, (because they put value on spiritual things) will inherit the kingdom of heaven. Galatians 5:16-17 But I say, walk by the Ruach, and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Ruach, but the Ruach sets its desire against the flesh - for these are in opposition to one another, so that you cannot do what you want."

Do you seek freedom? Doesn't everybody? John 8:36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed! Live in the spirit. John 6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is of no benefit. The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and are life! And the last word for today ... John 10:10b-11 I have come that they might have life, and have it abundantly! I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.
