Apology

Apology - usually taken as something people do to say 'sorry', but it has another important meaning, namely defending or arguing for a position or set of beliefs. We are told in the Scriptures always to be ready to give an account of the hope that we have in us (1 Peter 3:15). But how do we do this?

When asked, many will attempt to apologise; essentially, they apologise for being believers in Messiah, which devalues Yeshua Himself and casts a poor light on all those who believe in Him. It is, perhaps, not unexpected, given the degree of hostility which can sometimes come our way when sharing our faith - however gently and carefully - with our Jewish people, but if our faith is worth living for, then it is worth dieing for (so to speak).

We do ourselves and our listeners no favours if we are mealy-mouthed and denigrate our faith and choices. We should, on the other hand, offer a reasoned apologetic for our faith: not an apology, but a defence, a robust account of the (good) reasons for our faith and our testimony to Yeshua as the King and High Priest of Israel. We must be certain to mention the resurrection, the work of the Spirit in our lives today and the testimony of Scripture. Not only is this the truth, but it is the power of salvation for those who believe (Romans 1:16).

So next time you are challenged about your faith in Yeshua, don't apologise - say sorry - but offer an apology - a reasoned and robust defence - so that you offer something of value to believe in.
