Trusting in the Little - Part One

Standing at the Temple in Jerusalem, watching the people turn it into a market, Yeshua turned the tables over and proclaimed that in three days He would raise up the temple once again. (John 2:19) The people's response was "how is that possible when it took forty-six years to build?" We of course understand that Yeshua was speaking about His resurrection from the dead.

What exactly was it that caused Yeshua to react in this way? It was the people's self interest in finances and security.

Lets start at the beginning of how this temple (the second temple) was built and by whom. It was built by the Jews who had returned from Babylon after seventy years in the diaspora; just as Jeremiah prophesied.

First they built the walls with a sword in one hand for protection; building with the other hand. However, they re-built the walls but not the temple. That is why it is in written in Haggai 1:3-4, "Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, and this temple to lie in ruins?"

After seventy years in the diaspora we came back with a vision and calling to restore and build Jerusalem and the temple. What caused us to stop building the house of G-d is that the people went into debt to the authorities who were in fact our own people. (Nehemiah 5:6-8) So from being visionaries to build the house of G-d we became slaves to the government through taxes and other debts.
