Tonight begins Tu B'Shevat - Hebrew for the 15th day of Shevat - which is also known as the "birthday of the trees". What is Tu B'Shevat? Agriculturally, this used to be the marker for farmers to know when to bring their fourth-year tithe offering to the Temple. Traditionally we eat fruit on this day, especially those grown in the Land of Israel, and some people have a seder, based on the Pesach seder. When the Zionism movement grew and there began to be waves of aliyah and kibbutzim, Tu B'Shevat came to be a time to celebrate the regrowth of Israel. How can I mark Tu B'Shevat? Eat fruit! Try to buy fruit grown in Israel, or in-season produce grown in your local area. Plant a tree! You can donate money to have a tree planted in the Land in your name, or why not go to a local garden shop and buy some plants (even if flowers, rather than a tree) for your own garden?
