Psalm 123 - God defines us with His love

Psalm 123:3-4 "Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us! For we are exceedingly filled with contempt. Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorn of those who are at ease, with the contempt of the proud." NKJV

"Contempt!" Now there's a word that is completely undervalued in our modern society. It is so simple in Hebrew: Vuz. It is found 12 times in the Hebrew Scriptures (5 of those in the Psalms).

Maybe a definition would help. According to Dictionary.com, contempt is the feeling that a person or a thing is beneath consideration, worthless, or deserving scorn. In Psalm 123:3 we are filled with self contempt (a feeling of self-worthlessness) that can only be repaired by God, so we plead for mercy.

The same Hebrew word (buz or vuz) for contempt appears again in verse 4. This time we are the recipients of the scorn of those who are proud. Doesn't this Psalm teach the meaning of life? The earth scorns us, even we, ourselves, but our eyes look to God in heaven Who loves us. Let's remember to look up from where our redemption comes.
