Psalm 129 - God has birthed within us passion for Zion

Psalm 129:5-6 "Let all those who hate Zion be put to shame and turned back. Let them be as the grass on the housetops, which withers before it grows up" NKJV That first Hebrew word in verse 5 is Yavshu. It has a Hebrew form Boosh which means "ashamed". The next word in Hebrew is Yisogu meaning "turned back". So, what is it in verse 5 that is ashamed and turned back? Why it is none other than all those who hate Zion. In verse 6 those ashamed backsliders are further described as grass on the roof. Why does the Bible give us this word picture, "grass on the roof?" The last word of verse 6 gives the answer, Yavash or dried up (withered). Yes, grass on the roof has no shade. It also doesn't get seen much. Lastly, in Biblical times, water was precious and it would be difficult to get it on the roof in quantity. Grass on the roof will dry up for several reasons. Remember, these words are being sung to those worshippers who are rising up the stairway on a mission to make an offering before the Lord. But right in the middle here is an admonition that hating Zion will result in being turned away in shame. It is then compared to being roasted like grass on a rooftop, parched. Maybe Yeshua was thinking of these verses when he offered the parable of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16:24. Loving Zion seems so natural for us, but there are entire denominations of Christianity that are losing this key part of God's vision for His kingdom. May we always be passionate for the same things as our Lord and Savior.
