The lamb is the focus of Passover. In fact, the lamb is Passover. The Hebrew word Pesach, which is translated Passover, is not used by the Scriptures to refer to the holiday as is the common usage today, but specifically speaks of the lamb itself. Without the slaying of the lamb and the application of its blood on Israelite doors the Jews would have perished in Egypt; without the lamb there would have been no Exodus, no Torah at Mt. Sinai, no entrance into the Promised Land, etc.

The lamb is foundational to everything that God ever did and ever would do. The grasping of this reality would not only provide gratitude for Israel’s present deliverance from Egypt, but also the recognition of "the lamb slain from the foundation of the world" as He would be progressively revealed to the nation through the Jewish prophets and ultimately come to us.
