The importance of trees - Part One

In Deuteronomy 20, the principles of war are given to the people along with specific instructions in verses 19-20 for cutting down trees. We might ask ourselves what's the importance of knowing which trees to cut down in the middle of a war? There are many passages in the Word where a parallel is made between man and a tree. The literal translation from the Hebrew in Deuteronomy 20:19 is that the man is the tree of a field.

Why the parallel between a tree and man? What are the likenesses? They are both living and begin from a seed which needs good ground and to be cared for in order to grow

in a healthy way. The outward appearance changes and underneath in the unseen, the roots are established. Through the years both are challenged with standing against whatever comes against them. The rain, wind and fire that come against a tree can easily be translated to those battles and choices which we face in our daily lives.

If the roots are deep the tree will stand. Faith, man's roots, must also be deep in the Word of God for us to stand, maintain and persevere.
