John 17:5 Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world came to be.

Yeshua's prayer (all of John 17) is arranged in orderly thought groupings we have formed into paragraphs. Here in verse 5, Yeshua is providing us with the closing sentence of His first thought grouping (paragraph) which is His opening statement of prayer. To properly appreciate the verse, we have to look at it in the context of the verses both before and (as we will soon see) the verses after it as well.

Let's start by comparing the first and fifth verses. Notice the use of "glory" and "glorify."

John 17:1b Father ... Glorify Your Son, so the Son may glorify You.

John 17:5 Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world came to be.

The similarity is staggering. At the same time, the glory (for which Yeshua is praying on Himself and The Father) can be hard to understand until we remember that God's "glory" is His "oneness."

Isaiah 42:8a I am Adonai - that is My Name! My glory I will not give to another.

God's "oneness" (glory) He cannot share with another. If He did, it would be "two-ness" and no longer "oneness." "Two-ness" would mean there is separation, and there is no separation between the Father and the Son. When we accept Yeshua as our Lord and Savior, we become one with Him. Let's put these verses together.

Yeshua said, John 10:30 I and the Father are one. He also said, John 14:20 In that day, you will know that I am in My Father, you are in Me, and I am in you. And finally, Colossians 1:27b Messiah in you, the hope of glory!

Yeshua's prayer is about you and for you. In praying for His and the Father's glory, Yeshua is also praying for your glory too.

Romans 8:30 And those whom He predestined, He also called; and those whom He called, He also justified; and those whom He justified, He also glorified.

There is so much more to this, but this is just a short devotional. We will see in the coming days that Yeshua's prayer that Father, Son and all the saints would be glorified together.

Zechariah 14:9 Adonai will then be King over all the earth. In that day Adonai will be Echad and His Name Echad.
