Romans part 185 - Life in the Body 10
|
Romans 12:11 Do not be lagging in zeal; be fervent in spirit. Keep serving the Lord. Remember, this is a lesson in living in the body of Messiah. In general this is an exhortation to continue in participation. Begs a question, at what point do we get to say, "That's enough, I'm going to cash in my chips and take it to the house?" Answer: never. Paul is exhorting us all to continue in our service to God. The first phrase, "Do not be lagging in zeal," could also be translated as "Do not hesitate to show enthusiasm." Paul used the same word in 2 Corinthians 8:7 But as you excel in everything - in faith and speech and knowledge and all diligence, and in your love for us - also excel in this grace. To be "fervent in spirit" is to "boil over" spiritually. The same Greek word is used at the end of Acts 18 to describe the zeal of Apollos. In us, it is like that flash point at which vapors burst into flame. May we all ignite with zeal for God and the establishment of His kingdom. 1 Peter 1:22 Now that you have purified your souls in obedience to the truth, leading to sincere brotherly love, love one another fervently from a pure heart.
