Matthew 6:19-21 The Currency Of Heaven

Matthew 6:19-21 The Currency Of Heaven Rabbi Michael Weiner

Matthew 6:19-21 Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in or steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

The command is to store up treasures in heaven. What is the currency of heaven? As you might imagine, it is exactly the opposite of treasure on earth. Earthly treasure can be measured in monetary terms and the value (in monetary terms) of “stuff.” You may have heard it said, “The one who dies with the most toys wins.” Well, it’s not true. Let me tell you a story that illustrates the value of money. I read it on the internet, so it must be accurate.

Alfred Nobel, a Swedish chemist, invented dynamite, (he actually held 355 patents in his lifetime) and became very rich for doing so. Many of his inventions fueled (pun intended) the machinery of war. Alfred regretted this so much that upon his death in 1895, he left million to establish the well known Nobel Prize Foundation that first honored and rewarded those who benefit humanity and peace in 1901. They are still making those awards.

News flash! Heavenly treasure can’t be bought. Not only that, but it should please you to know that the currency of heaven is such that the more you “spend” it, the more you gain. As you use it, it doesn’t decrease, it actually increases. The currency of heaven is the fruit of the spirit.

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Ruach is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control – against such things there is no law.

The Bible refers to “jewels in your crown.” This is a reference to the currency of heaven. Jacob 1:12 Happy is the one who endures testing, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord promised to those who love Him. Not only will you receive a crown, but you will BE a crown. Isaiah 62:3 You will also be a crown of beauty in the hand of Adonai, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.

God delights in the prosperity of His children. 2 Corinthians 8:9 For you know the grace of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah – that even though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, so that through His poverty you might become rich. He’s given us the best currency. He expects us to steward it well. In the power of His Spirit, go forth and spend, spend, spend. To God be the glory!
